Morocco, Marrakesh

Morocco is located in the Maghreb region of North Africa, with coastlines stretching from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, and reaching from the Strait of Gibraltar to the Mediterranean Sea. Morocco has a population of over 33.8 million, with Rabat as its capital. The largest city is Casablanca, with other major cities include Marrakesh.

Marrakesh is one of the country’s imperial cities, and lies near the foothills of the snow capped Atlas Mountains, a few hours from the foot of the Sahara Desert. The city is divided into two districts: the Medina, the historical city, and Gueliz, the new modern district.

The Medina is full of intertwining narrow passageways, and includes local shops full of character. Jeema El Fna square is where tourists, locals and vendors congregate. In contrast, Gueliz plays host to an array of modern restaurants, fast food chains and big brand stores. Marrakesh also has a modern sector, with luxury hotels and streets with many mopeds and quides, which co-exist seamlessly with the past.

Marrakesh has a hot and semi-arid climate, with average temperatures ranging from 12°C (54°F) in the winter, to 32-45°C (90-113°F) in the summer.
